SONIC Drive-In is now in South Orange County looking a little different after passing a few stepford regulations imposed by the City of Mission Viejo. Although the exterior isn’t traditional, they’re serving the same food by carhops on roller skates. I LOVE that about SONIC — It’s nostalgic and fun.
Although SONIC has been around for more than 50 years and has over 3,500 locations, I had yet to pass one during my travels, until its appearance in Mission Viejo just over two weeks ago. This was my first visit. You can consider the items below as potential prizes in the $25 on the 25th SONIC Gift Card Giveaway.
These days all fast food restaurants are working to serve healthy choices. SONIC is serving a Grilled Chicken Sandwich on a Wheat Bun — It was one of the better ones I’ve tried. We also appreciated the Fresh Apples with the Low Fat Caramel Dipping Sauce and a Banana as a Side option. On their website is an itemized calorie meal builder, which can be helpful too.
A few of us gathered to try a lot of food and were happy to learn that Breakfast is served all day long. The Texas Toast options are different — We chose the Bacon Cheeseburger Toaster, which comes with an Onion Ring.
And we had to get the Tots, since that’s one of the Sides they’re appreciated for. The Tots were perfectly crispy, but we really liked the Onion Rings that are freshly battered each day. They’re not frozen — That’s a good thing.
We were completely stuffed after the Sausage Biscuit Dippers & Gravy, Frito Chili Cheese Pie Wrap, Turtle Pecan & Caramel Bundt Cake and famous Cherry Limeade (aka giant Shirley Temple). In addition to what’s pictured here, there was more and we particularly loved the Banana Cream Pie Shake. SONIC’s Drink options are crazy good. How can you pick one? We all left with three each, HA. It appears many will drive for miles to eat at a SONIC. One pictured below drove all the way from Connecticut. Okay, she didn’t drive to California just for it, but she did pass many along the way.
Overall, I found SONIC Drive-In to be more than just a fast food restaurant. It’s a fun experience. You can sit on the patio or stay in your car parked in one of the Drive-In stalls, to be served by a skating carhop — Or just drive through. They have a Happy Hour (2-4 PM), $1 Menu and more, but you’ll need to learn the rest from them.
FYI: The SONIC Drive-In $25 Gift Card Giveaway closes at 11:59 PM (Pacific) on June 24th, 2009. Enter a comment on this post NOW for a chance to win. The lucky winners will be notified via e-mail on June 25th and we’ll mail out the Gift Cards the same day, or as soon as an address is provided.
So glad that there is a Sonic in Puyallup,WA now 🙂 The owner of that Sonic should be very happy as there was up to a 2 to 3 hour wait just to be able to order! That was how it was for a solid month they were open. Thanks Sonic! Even if I dont win the gift card Im very happy we now have a Sonic!
My fav drink is the diet cherry limeade – you hardly know it’s diet! I love sonic!
I love Sonic. Here in the midwest, it is a staple and we have one in each of the 4 or 5 suburbs and probably another 7 in the major city we are close to.
My favorites are: onion rings, cherry limeade, sonic burger w/cheese #1, strawberry cream slushy, foot long cony w/cheese and onions.
We don’t have roller skates any more here though 🙁
I am an avid Somic fan, have been for years! I have lived in southern Oklahoma my entire life, and pretty much make daily Sonic visits to order my large Diet Coke! Would love to win the giftcard, thanks.
Hello………..Happy Hour where all drinks are half price! We love our Sonics. And luckily we have them all over Utah!
My daughter even worked as a car hop for Sonic for several years!
Oh my goodness I would love to take my husband out to Sonics! I truly appreciate the experience and the good food offered!
Great review, store in South Orange looks good. Big fan of Sonic great food, good service.
Thanks for all the great extra information! It was interesting to read. GOOD LUCK and we appreciate your comment. 🙂
As a long time resident of Kansas and born in the Home State of Sonic Drive In (Oklahoma, OK!!), I can assure you that Sonic is a wonderful place to eat. Not necessarily the healthiest, but I do love their new Chicken Sandwiches on whole wheat bread. One of the Sonic restaurants told me, with regards to their foods – if they have an ingredient used for one food, they’ll combine it however you want with other foods they don’t usually cook with it. For example – they got onions, they batter ’em every day. They have the Sonic Burger (#1 is with mayo #2 is with mustard, or the other way around, I forget, I just look at the menu), but the default is for like lettuce and pickles – but you can ask them to add grilled onions if you like grilled onions! I suppose if you wanted a grilled onion slushie, they’d make it for you (and keep the gagging noises to themselves???). Heh. Never tried it but anyway…it’s a whole culture, a whole attitude.
I might mention that not all Sonics do the roller skating thing. Not sure why – I guess up to individual management and/or franchisee ownership? I live in the Wichita area and there’s like oh, I’m guessing at least 15-20 in the Metro and surrounding communities in the county, and probably only 1 or 2 that I can think of do the skates. Probably depends on if the employees themselves actually own skates and in some of the poorer neighborhoods, likely might not. I’ve seen Sonics in Northwestern Arkansas that did roller skate, and so on.
Anyway I’m real happy for ya’ll in Mission Viejo having your own Sonic now. I lived in Pasadena CA for a year back 30 years ago and was always homesick for Sonic. The Big Boy? Big Bob? (sorry, senility is setting in) was cute, but didn’t quite cut the mustard… 😉
For those who keep Kosher(ish), I’ve found the Breakfast Sandwich on the Ciabatta bun is quite delicious with just the egg and cheese alone, skip the sausage, or you can have them substitute the sausage for a beef or chicken from the various beef or chicken sandwiches…for an additional upcharge, of course…since there is a price differential between the cheaper sausage to the nicer chicken or beef. It works!
Anyway just saw the link on my twitter, since I’m following @sonicDrive_in , so if you’re out and about on Twitter, ya’ll might find me there. I forwarded the link to a homesick Okie stranded out on the East Coast without a Sonic, so maybe she can win this card too! 😉
and above all else, when in Oklahoma –
GO COWBOYS!!!
😉
OMG, I have been requesting a Sonic in NJ for years! You’re FINALLY here! Thank you thank you THANK YOU!!! I promise to patronize it every week!!!!!!!!
I’ve only been once, since its kinda far from my house. But it is so worth it to have your delicous food at night 😀 Slushies are a classic but the banana cream pie milkshake was awesome!!! My driving instructor is going to let us drive there soon! 🙂
Always up for a RT 44 Sonic Diet Cherry Limeade, especially during Happy Hour!
I am obsessed with Sonic! I get it almost everyday on my lunch break!
We just went for the first time recently and really liked it. Fun place! We want to go again, so please let us win. Thank you very much. 🙂
I LOVE SONIC! Sonic is my favorite hamburger joint. I also love all of the awesome drinks and ice cream! Too bad I can’t afford to go to Sonic, let alone buy groceries. Luckily hey had the free Root Beer Float nite so I got to enjoy a small taste of Sonic again. So Awesome! Thanks Sonic!
If you’ve never been to Sonic you are missing out. Sonic is genius!
Sonic is some of the best “fast” food you will ever taste. I actually just had some for breakfast this morning. ( Sausage Breakfast Toaster, Sausage Breakfast Burrito, and some Ched’r Bites ). I am lucky to live in a city that has a good hand full of them in town. hmmm…25$ worth of Sonic… the possibilities are endless 🙂
I went to the Santee Sonic twice on opening day waiting i think about 5 hours in line for lunch and dinner. then of course, had to go back almost everyday of the week haha
I moved to Pennsylvania from Oklahoma seven years ago and I MISS SONIC SOOO MUCH. I saw where one was built here but still a ways away. What I wouldn’t give to have a Sonic burger, tater tots and ESPECIALLY a CHERRY LIMEADE. See commercials all the time w/ new stuff you’ve added over the years, would love to try some of it!!
Planning on going to one in the Twin citiesfor the 1st time with a friend from North Dakota on Friday
Sonic is pretty much amazing!
most the sonics in Oklahoma don’t have the car hops skating around 🙁
Haven’t been to one but am looking forward to trying it.
Curly fries – regular fries such a decision.
I think the kids would LOVE Sonics…The commercials don’t quite get the same message across as your blog…Great job! The Meyerhofers will be checking it out on a summer day when looking for something fun to do!
I love Sonic. I hope I win. Thanks for the contest.
I like the looks of those small sausage bisquit sliders with gravy!
I’ve never eaten at a Sonic before, but after looking at some of the pictures of the food I will definintely be looking for one. Especially now since I hear there is one near my house. Thanks for the info!
Food looks yummy, would like to try the onion rings, thanks for having this giveaway…hope I win:)
The texas toast sandwich looks so good I can’t wait to try it.
I have thoroughly enjoyed all of trips to Sonic (the brown bag special is my favorite) and am glad there in a new one in Santee, CA. Can’t wait for more to pop up in San Diego!!
I want to try the bundt cake sundaes!
I’ve been following your site for some time now, but this is my first comment. I hope I win and I hope you have more contests. Keep up all the great articles.
Wow. Great report and photos. Please enter me in the contest. I live near the Anaheim Sonic. I love your blog! Thanks.
I want to make a late-night run to Sonic!
yuuuuuuuuuuummy!
Hope was comes close to my house. Everything looks soooooo good!!
Like so many other commenters here I always want to go to a Sonic but I don’t know of a convenient one. This new Mission Viejo may be good though.
My sis is always driving through Sonic in Illinois. I didn’t know they were here in CA. I will have to find one and take the kids there.
Until your post, I didn’t realize that they delivered the food on skates, drive-in style!! I have seen Sonic commercials before and they vague as to this service they provide. They need to get rid of the nerdy guys and focus on the roller skaters! Sonic here we come!
I love Sonic! Everyone needs to try the Cherry Cream Slush and the popcorn chicken salad!! Yummy!
I have always wanted to try Sonic, but the location was always too far from us. I will look for the new locations and take the kids.
I, too, see Sonic advertised all the time and I’m excited to see that they actually have a location in California! Your blog makes the food look fantastic. I really want to try the onion rings! Thanks for sharing this information.
I HEART sonic! I could go for a snicker blasty thing right now!
I miss Sonic burger in Newport Beach. Good for Mission Viejo for putting one in. Shelly, you would look darling roller skating around that place doing fun, fast, informative interviews for the Food Network! Love the review. I want to eat at the happy hour $1 menu. Thanks for the tip Ms. Tipster. Keep them coming.
Thanks for the contest! The skates are great…maybe it’s just my love of roller derby and burgers!
What a great post, Shelly!
— Sonic looks so colorful and fun
— I bet the food is as good as it looks
Haven’t been yet but after all of the raves, I’ll have to go now!
The messier the hamburger the better it is!!!
Love the review!
Sonic is great. Fun and tasty food, it’s good for the whole family.
Hey Shelly,
I always see the SONIC commercials but there’s never any close by. the food looks good and that looks like so much fun having the old school roller skaters deliver the food out. I will have to go.
