Time To Gather A Pumpkin To Carve And Ideas Too.

Don’t toss the SEEDS, bake ’em — Pumpkin Seeds are too easy to make, especially in October.
Chef Lexi of Kids in the Kitchen loves the Funfetti Mix Kits by Pillsbury and recently made their Whoopie Pies for a Pool Party. They were a hit — Everyone was excited to see and eat them. They are much better than the Whoopie Cushions she usually brings to a party. Thanks Lex.
When asked if I wanted to sample Wheat Thins Stix, my first thought was no thanks. To be honest, I’ve never been a fan of Wheat Thins, but know my Mom is. She’s been snacking on them ever since I was a kid. Since they’re always in her cupboard, I asked if she wanted to try the Wheat Thins Stix. She agreed and here we are — Lexi from Kids in the Kitchen (pictured) loved them, especially the Cinnamon Kick. And my Mom liked both. Okay, I sampled a few too and have no complaints. Thanks for the opportunity Nabisco, as I’m now partially converted.
Update: Apologies, the post title was changed due to formatting issues.
Our last day at the OC Fair included Cupcakes.
More Chili Cheese Fries.
And everything FOOD related.
Champagne in the Wine Garden with Cheese and Grapes.
Another Sky Ride — Love the view, but it still scares me.
We will miss all there is/was to do at the Orange County Fair.
See you next year.
It started with our favorite Beef Brisket Sandwich at the Chuck Wagon — We love it!
Admission and parking was FREE from Noon – 1PM.
It was the busiest opening day we’ve seen.
The results of the Culinary Arts Competition (1st Show) are in and my Blondies won a First Place Ribbon. Cool! It made up for non-placement of my Fancy White Chocolate Flags.
$2 Samplings are available every Friday between Noon – 4PM.
We had a sampling of the Australian Battered Potatoes — One was plenty good.
Waiting for Ribs.
Tomato varieties for future reference.
The above table was entered in the Amateur Table Setting Competition. We found it a crack up. While most try to create something fancy or beautiful, this individual produced something (probably) more realistic and definitely comical with a Cat Food can vase and leftover Subway Sandwich napkins for to-go Pizza and basic Beer. Brilliant but no ribbon.
Faces at the OC Fair — Cows, Goats, Pigs, Chickens and ours. Chef Niece Bailee of Kids in the Kitchen also won a First Place Ribbon for her painting pointed out by my lovely Mom, Pamela.
Have you seen the California Pizza Kitchen Original BBQ Chicken Chopped Salad Kit?
It’s sold at Costco, unsure if exclusively — And my Mom loves it.
She and Chef Niece Bailee of Kids in the Kitchen mixed it all together.
My thoughts… It’s not bad, but I don’t love it. For its cost of $9-something, I’d rather go to California Pizza Kitchen to have the real thing, or make the Salad from scratch using my CPK Cookbook, as I did once before. The Salad Kit comes with everything the Original BBQ Chicken Chopped Salad does in the restaurant, except Romaine — You’ll need to purchase and add it separately, which ultimately adds to its cost.
What do you think about it?
Kids in the Kitchen playing Hedbanz — I am a Cake — I am Bacon. Am I edible?
Obviously the cow came before the Milk, as I Need Text Company (“INTC”) came before Nibbles of Tidbits. Freelance Writing Services continue to be available by way of INTC, as Nibbles of Tidbits thrives. A Nibbles of Tidbits Facebook Page was created to bifurcate our presence there — If you “Like” Nibbles of Tidbits fka “Fan” (A FB name change: It’s less committal, 😉 ), I may Like you too. I get the change, I’m not a fan of many things, but like a lot. I’d be more apt to like YOU. Aside from all that, inquire within regarding professional writing services.
Maggie likes Nibbles of Tidbits.
In contrast to our new-fangled fork on Facebook, the Vintage Milk Truck serves to connect the post title and highlight a historical relationship with Milk. All are presented to establish capability and experience, with more to be learned at INTC — And to celebrate creative freedom here on Nibbles of Tidbits. It’s a balanced association, amply liberated for your benefit too. Though I sometimes resemble Mr. Bill, the words are King.
My Play-Doh face, modeled by Chef Lexi the day all photos were taken.
Our resident Chef Lexi of Kids in the Kitchen made and decorated the pictured Cupcakes for a school fundraiser. She especially liked the ‘Frosting can that works like Cheez Whiz‘ and the adornments picked up at TJ Maxx. They look awesome and should raise millions.
Observing Martin Luther King Day from coast to coast — I personally respect his tremendous patience. And in relation to food, MLK makes us think of Milk, as it’s just missing a letter, and Milk Chocolate, a tie in to M&M’s World in New York’s Times Square, where Kids in the Kitchen Chef’s Lexi and Bailee are currently visiting. They loved all the colors.
They say it’s freezing in New York right now, but we’re observing the holiday in Newport Beach where it’s 74° today — I love New York, but it’s hard to beat Southern California weather.
I also think about MLK by U2 on The Unforgettable Fire, one of the best albums of all time.
Toaster Oven S’mores can be ready in less than a minute. Do you even need instructions?
Layer as shown, then broil/toast the exposed Marshmallows and top with other Graham Cracker half. They couldn’t turn out better! Keep an eye out not to burn the Marshmallows and learn more about making S’mores here. And if you want to head the opposite direction and make everything from scratch, The Cilantropist does it beautifully — Until then, these will do. Make a bunch in the oven for a crowd. No fire circle or wire hangers necessary.
Using up leftover Mini Marshmallows — Roasting them in the Toaster Oven on Fondue Forks.
Aren’t they cute?
Have you seen that Reddi-wip commercial, whereas Reddi-wip is offered as “Cream” for a slice of Pie and generic Cool Whip is offered as “Oil” for the same? Oil or Cream says the waitress. Cream of course. Who wants Oil on a slice of Pie?! If Cool Whip is truly made of Oil, I don’t know. You may want to research that yourself. For fun on Thanksgiving, Chef Lexi and I tested Reddi-wip’s marketing campaign by asking each guest if he/she wanted Oil or Cream on their Pumpkin Pie.
And interestingly some who usually opt for Cool Whip on Pumpkin Pie, chose the Reddi-wip this year. Hhmmmmm, effective marketing? It’s not like Cream is tremendously better for you than Oil, but at least it’s what you think you’re getting. Cream obviously sounds more desirable on Pie (or any dessert) than Oil. Regardless, our final position is this… Reddi-wip and Cool Whip are fine on occasion, but real Whipping Cream is so much better than both. Know that it’s convenient too, in that it only takes a few minutes to whip up and can be stored in the fridge a few days.
Have you heard of, seen or tried a Grapple yet? I first saw them on Unwrapped. They’re Washington Extra Fancy Gala or Fuji Apples that are infused with a concentrated Grape flavor. It’s said that Grapples look like an Apple, but taste like a Grape, and is described to have the sweet distinctive flavor of a Concord Grape with the crispness of a fresh Apple. Chef Lexi (below) from Kids in the Kitchen gives ’em a try.
And the verdict is in… Lexi and the tastin’ gang behind the camera (5 of us) were unanimous — The Apples were indeed fresh and tasted like Grape, but the Grape flavor unexpectedly tasted artificial. Its scent and taste was reminiscent of purple, Grape flavored Candy or Soda, not that of a true Concord Grape, as we were hoping.
Since we’re always interested in different things, we had to try a Grapple. They’re definitely of premium quality, but we didn’t fall in love with their flavor. Regardless, we appreciate trying unique foods — It’s a fun time.
Been camping in South Carlsbad, but will soon post our final wrap up of the Foodbuzz Blogger Festival and back log of reports that’s ensued. It’s all good.
Cooking Hot Dogs over the camp fire while the sun sets over South Carlsbad.
Relaxing.
Running through the Seagulls hoping for a few things not to happen.
Creative dog walking with a Cheese Puff and fishing pole — No hook. 🙂
Inspiring a lazy dog to walk.
It worked, but not for very long.
Wake up Maggie got it.
Painted rocks in South Carlsbad. Nibbles of Tidbits left a special message on a rock — Find it and describe and we’ll send you a prize. Good luck!
Another sunset on a mini vacation.
We wanted to buy this giant fork (and spoon) at Pier 1 Imports, but they cost too much and there’s really nowhere to put them — Sooooo instead we played with ’em in the store. Probably not the best example to set, but ‘crazy aunt’ status can be a good excuse to act silly. We just dusted them off with laughter. Can you see Lexi’s reflection in the fork? 🙂
Where’s the giant food?
Although no voting takes place here, you’re cordially invited to peek at my who cares anymore dinner party, a blog post formerly known as the Challenge #3 Luxury Dinner Party in Project Food Blog. I’m kidding (kinda), I care. And we did have a nice party, after I drank away my sorrow, just kidding again (mostly kinda). The links will provide more information about all that. We’ll continue with the party — I prepared a few Thai dishes, since I’m familiar with the cuisine and dinner guests were not.
I invited my awesome family to partake in the food and since none were familiar with Thai food, this post is really titled Thai One Over On The Family, instead of who cares. 🙂 I know they do. They’re generally Steak, Seafood and Potato people. The Potato People — Sounds scary. Anyway, they were game to try it all. I didn’t tell them about the Fish Sauce, but used it sparingly just in case. Busted — They know now.
Since this post is no longer in competition and other stuff needs to get done, it’ll mostly consist of photos, a few words and relevant links. Hover your cursor over each photo to learn a little more. We had a great time together, as always. I appreciate them so much.
Grilling Chicken and Filet Mignon Satay in the backyard on a beautiful day, with the Coconut Peanut Sauce waiting on the sidelines.
They take just minutes to cook, so turn them over quickly, take ’em off the grill and dig in. The Satay was the family favorite, as expected.
They’re finally ready to dip into the Coconut Peanut Sauce.
Just a few of the ingredients used to prepare our Thai meal, certainly not all.
The Shrimp and Coconut Milk Soup started with defrosting homemade Chicken Stock, Lemongrass, Kaffir Lime Leaves and Galangal. I’d made this soup many times before, but it’s been a few years. About 10 years ago, I was working as a Paralegal at a large law firm and we were having a fund raiser for the United Way. To assist, I offered to prepare ‘any dish’ for the highest bidder. One law partner paid $750 for a spicy Tom Kha Gai, a variation of the pictured Soup. Thank God it turned out well and all proceeds went to the United Way.
Wish we could show you the Shrimp in the “Shrimp” and Coconut Milk Soup. It’s too late now.
The pots were filled and the Lemongrass Tea chilled and ready for guests. I’m not sure if the above photo can be considered artsy or if it’s just plain blurry!? If just blurry, I apologize. Had I still been in the competition, I would’ve taken more photos. 🙂
I also prepared a Vegetable Curry with a bountiful array of fresh Veggies (Baby Bok Choy, Sweet Pea Pods, Yams, Asparagus Tips, Carrots, Potatoes, Cauliflower, Zucchini and Broccoli).
And a Thai Peanut Noodle Salad, Saffron Rice and homemade Mango Lime Sherbet Ice Cream. I found the BEST Peanut Dressing recipe for the Noodle Salad and coincidentally it’s by another Foodbuzz Featured Publisher. It’s linked here and definitely a keeper.
The girls at the Thai Dinner Party (l-r) Niece Lexi, Mom, Sister Ami, Niece Bailee and Maggie, the King Charles Cavalier. The boys were in the den watching football.
Lexi entertaining the crowd, as usual — She’s staring at YOU.
The Mango Lime Sherbet turned out too tart and I even added more sugar than the recipe called for. Although everyone claimed to love tart flavors, it was pushing it. My Dad took one bite and handed it back to me with a pucker on his face.
Above is a little sampling for the dog, just kidding — It’s what I had the next day, a Mini-Meal. For the Satay and Coconut Peanut Sauce, I used a recipe similar to the one linked here.
My Nieces were in charge of the camera most of the time and secretly recorded us on video too many times. I can’t use that, hahaha. And I’m not even sure who this is, but it’s funny. When it’s discovered by its Star, I may need to take it down — Until then, enjoy. 🙂 The only photo of me is the BBQ’ing hands. I’m okay with that. Thanks Kids in the Kitchen.
I’ve always wanted to make Heart Shaped Eggs & Toast and just learned that it’s hard to get the Egg Yolk to perch in the center of the Bread — It tends to settle in one curve of the heart or the other. Oh well, does it matter? I think so, since the results look more spooky than romantic. Did the freshly ground Pepper land perfectly to form eyeballs? No, they’re fun props once employed for another project. It’s funny how they instantly bring things to life. 🙂
I used Nature’s Pride 100% Whole Wheat Bread and large fresh (recall proof) Eggs. To view other Nature’s Pride Bread recipes and info, check out this link. Should the above be made again for Valentine’s Day or Halloween? I wonder what Rorschach would say?
I recently saw a Dolphin Banana on a party fruit platter and was compelled to make the same out of this morning’s Banana and a Spinach Leaf. It’s not bad for a first attempt, but I think its nose is a (little) too short — Either way it made for an entertaining breakfast. Try it.
‘Pick out all the Candy you want’ is what I said to my Chef Nieces, Baliee and Lexi from Kids in the Kitchen — It would’ve been a dream come true for me as a kid. I still love Candy and Cost Plus World Market has the best selection, if you don’t know that already!?
Come with me and you’ll be in a world of Pure Imagination — A song superbly sang by Gene Wilder in one of the most magical movie clips ever and appropriate to this post. Cost Plus could be a modern day Willy Wonka. Today it was.
I think I would have picked out way more Candy than they did, hahaha, but we did end up with a good cross-section of nostalgic, imported, mainstream, unique and extreme Candy, which was fun to try — On a rowdy sugar high we dumped the tub of Old Time Favorites over Chef Lexi’s head. It’s raining Candy. 🙂
We had a great time trying the Violet Mints, Candy Buttons, Mango Gummy Candy, Ginger Candy Chews and various small imported Chocolate Bars. And we enjoyed having a couple nostalgic favorites, like Chick-O-Sticks and Bit-O-Honey. The Toxic Waste Candy pictured below was ridiculously strong. They do call it ‘hazardously sour Candy’ and you can tell by the post-sampling expressions.
We haven’t yet tried the Bean Boozled by Jelly Belly. We’re afraid and may need to host a Jelly Belly Fear Factor Game later — Stay tuned for that when we find a couple brave volunteers. So far all asked say no way José.
Note: Photos for this Candy Taste-Off were taken at the Bella Terra Cost Plus World Market. If going to the movie theater nearby, we suggest stopping in Cost Plus to get the Candy — Shhhhhh. So sorry, theater Candy prices are gouging and I buy the Popcorn.
We finally got into Rao’s! Obviously not Rao’s original Harlem location, since the wait is two years to never to get in, and California is a bit too far for a New York dinner reservation. However, during our recent trip to Las Vegas we had lunch at Rao’s Caesars Palace. We already booked dinner reservations elsewhere, but knew we had to make time and room for Rao’s Meatballs too.
We have Rao’s Cookbook and consider their Meatballs to be one of our favorite recipes. We’ve made them on a few occasions, thus had to try the actual Meatballs at the restaurant. They were equally amazing as expected and we are so happy to have the recipe.
The pictured dining room is a replica of Rao’s original location with handfuls of tables. Fortunately Rao’s Caesars Palace built two identical dining rooms to offer more people the Rao’s experience, since most of us will never know the magic of Rao’s Harlem.
Rao’s outdoor patio is just steps away from Caesars Palace’s happening swimming pools, where we polished off our stiff Cadillac Margaritas. We also had the pleasure of meeting Bubbles (pictured below), a special Host at Rao’s. We first saw him sitting at the end of the bar and knew he was a kool kat. For some reason we b-lined to him wanting to know his story, and was somehow transported to New York during our interesting conversation. We initially didn’t know he was/is with Rao’s and now we’re excited to send our signed, framed photo (as instructed) to be hung amongst all the remarkable, nostalgic photos decorating their walls. We’re honored and delighted to be a part of it. Thanks Rao’s and Bubbles. 🙂
* The unrelated frog painting was approved as an entry into the OC Fair’s Fine Arts Category and was painted by my talented Niece Bailee of Kids in the Kitchen. The frog’s eyes match the colors in the Rao’s photograph and both were on the table — Plus it looks cool and we always want to promote the fabulous Fair, as seen by Chef Lexi’s entry here.
