Nibbles Of Tidbits: It’s Worth Testing Logo Designs With Fiverr.

July 31st, 2016 No comments

Nibbles of Tidbits LogoI like the one pictured above — With little instruction, effort and money put forth, I received these logos.  Not bad at all.  I used Fiverr.com and reported about them previously.  One is able to buy and/or sell graphic design services there and more, which has seamlessly served me well so far.

I appreciate the time that I didn’t spend creating all.NibblesofTidbits LogoEach can be used at any time, but the first, top one is the winner of this batch of inexpensive logos.

Pepsi Donut Bacon Dog

How about a Pepsi Donut Bacon Dog?  You can get one at the Orange County Fair now through August 14, 2016.  It’s a Hot Dog that’s wrapped in Bacon and served on a Donut topped with a Pepsi Glaze.  We had the opportunity to try it and other new food options at this year’s OC Fair.

Food Tasting

We attended a “Media VIP Food Party” to taste “Interesting & New Foods at the 2016 OC Fair.”

Bacon Cheddar Brat Burger

The Bacon Cheddar Brat Burger is pictured above and found at Tasti Burger on Livestock Lane.

Pineapple Bowls

Yes, there are healthy options at the OC Fair — My favorite is the Shrimp Pineapple Bowl found at Pineapple Express in the Main Mall area.  They also offer a Teriyaki Chicken Pineapple Bowl.

Chicken Charlie

And you’ve heard of Chicken Charlie right?  Of Chicken Charlie’s?  He’s pictured above and always serves something interesting — One of his menu items this year is a Chicken in a Waffle on a Stick.  It’s a Waffle with pieces of Fried Chicken cooked into it and it comes with Maple Syrup.

Pinks

Pink’s Hot Dogs is a booth I frequent every OC Fair, but it’s because of their Chili Cheese Fries, another one of my favorites.  Aside from that, they’re offering a couple of new Hot Dogs this year, like The Lord of the Rings Dog, a Hot Dog served with Onion Rings wrapped around it.

Dominic Palmieri at OC Fair

Dominic (pictured above) of Biggy’s and Fair Fix & Fried A Fair, both located in the Main Carnival area, tops himself this year with the Bacon Wrapped Pork Belly Dog, Deep Fried Butter, Deep Fried Nutella and more.  Stop by and say “Hi.”  All the food vendors we met are friendly.

Pickle Fries

A drum roll for the Pickle Fries — I love Pickle Fries, especially since my name is Pickles Freis.  My husband nicknamed me Pickles and my last name is Freis.  Thus I’m Pickles Freis.  And these are good Pickles and the Batter is thin and crunchy too.  Pickles Freis very much likes these Pickle Fries.

Tasti Chips

Tasti Chips with Parmesan Cheese from Tasti Chips, located on Livestock Lane is pictured above. We had the Jalapeno Cheddar Tasti Chips after seeing The Offspring concert last week.

Me at the OC Fair

I love the Orange County Fair — There’s so much to do and see.

Dahlia

Though you can’t eat these flowers, I must post at least one, and Matt capturing them.

Photographing Flowers

The baby pigs below were only 4 days old when they were photographed here.  They grow fast.

Baby Pigs

As always, I will be entering the culinary competitions happening at the end of July and in August. I’m working on a couple ideas and hope to claim the first place ribbon I have my head through below.  I tested one of my recipes and it turned out well, but I will report the judge’s results.

Me at Fair

See you at the OC Fair — Too bad it’s not all year long.

Nibbles Of Tidbits: Playing With Cartoons & Testing Potential Logos.

June 19th, 2016 No comments

Shelly Borrell Freis

Have you heard of Fiverr.com?  It’s where I got the cartoon above created.  Fiverr.com is a fun, useful, creative place where one can commission a custom cartoon, caricature, logo or other graphic design for a great price.  One can buy and/or sell graphic and design projects, as well as writing, translation, video, audio, programming and marketing projects, and much more.  Check it out.

Pie Honorable Mention Photo

I’m currently hooked on graphics — I commissioned a couple cartoons, vectors and logos.  At approximately $5 – $20 each, I can afford it.  It’s interesting working with artists/sellers around the world.  I’ve had good experiences so far.  Comparison Photo:  A Pie I made won an honorable mention at the Orange County Fair a few years back and this is a photo of me behind it.

Winning Salad Ingredients Inspired By Blue Apron Meals.

September 27th, 2015 No comments

Winning Quinoa Bean Salad

It was Red Quinoa, introduced by Blue Apron, that inspired me to create the pictured Red Quinoa and Garbanzo Bean/Chickpea Salad, with Shallots, Parsley, Mint, Arugula, Toasted Slivered Almonds, Red Wine Vinegar, Dijon Mustard, Olive Oil and Salt & Pepper.  It was for the OC Fair’s Culinary Arts Competition this year and I won a 5th Place Ribbon for it.  Measurements aren’t listed, because they didn’t need to be submitted — I just fine tuned the combination until it tasted great and now it’s a Salad I’ll forever make in varying combinations, with Quinoa, Beans and Nuts.

Winning Ribbons

I won a second 5th Place Ribbon for a different Salad using Orzo Pasta, Broccoli and Pine Nuts.

Do Us A Flavor Lay’s: Pick My Chip Idea Next Time.

Do Us A Flavor Contest Finalists

Have you heard of Lay’s Do Us A Flavor Chip Contest?  Lays may someday pay YOU for coming up with a great Chip idea.  This time the finalists’ flavors are… West Coast Truffle Fries, Southern Biscuits and Gravy, and Greektown Gyro and New York Reuben Sandwich flavors. Different.  I like that and was excited to try each, but… hhmmm… some aren’t executed that well. Bummer. The Reuben and Gyro Chips just taste weird.  Some of the respective Sandwich components can be tasted in each, but neither come together in a positive tasty manner.  And the Truffle Fries Chips don’t have enough Truffle flavor.  They taste more like Sour Cream and Onion Chips.  The best of the (4) in a collective opinion of five are the Southern Biscuits and Gravy Chips.  They have a good, peppery Biscuits and Gravy flavor and might be purchased by us post review.  Lays should pick my Chip idea next time — TBA if it happens.  In any event, it’s a fun contest that I hope continues.

5-Hour Energy Yummification Contest: Introducing The 5 N’ Thrive.

August 19th, 2014 No comments

It’s likely we won’t win the 5-Hour Energy Yummification Contest, but we learned a lot trying.  The contest closes today, and then it’s our video amongst 400+ other video entries (I think) vying to win $50K, $30K, $10K or $1K.  All sound good to me.  We each created a Drink Recipe using (1) 5-Hour Energy Drink and a one-minute video preparing it.  Our drink, the 5′ N Thrive is simple to make and good tasting, but our video ended up compressed by time and size limits.  Overall, it was fun to do and we still hope for the best — Recipe is on the video.

Lay’s Do Us A Flavor Chip Contest Take Two: We Pick Only One.

Lay's Chip Contest II

I submitted a Potato Chip flavor idea in Lay’s latest Do Us A Flavor – Choose Your Chip Contest, but never heard back.  It appears they didn’t choose my flavor idea… Steakhouse Bloody Mary Kettle Cooked Chips, which would have to be better than Cappuccino, don’t you think?  I was surprised to see and taste that option, but do appreciate its uniqueness.

Lay's Chip Contest 002

With respect to Lay’s actual picks (above), I was most excited about the Wasabi Ginger and Mango Salsa, thought the Cheddar Bacon Mac & Cheese to be basic, and the Cappuccino to be odd.  After tasting all, I’d only be able to eat an entire bag of one, the Cheddar Bacon Mac & Cheese.  I’m not sure how I’m able to taste Macaroni in a Potato Chip, but somehow can.  They’re pretty good.  Overall, we could only eat a couple Cappuccino Chips before they got sickening, a few more of the Wasabi Ginger Chips before being overpowered by their flavor, and the Mango Salsa Chips tasted like my favorite Fruit Lollipop at Disneyland, a flavor not sought in a Chip.  We say #SaveBaconMac, if any.  Vote for your favorite — Previous winners.

OC Fair Report: Second Place Equates To Three Wins For Shelly’s Jellies.

OC Fair Win - Watermelon Shelly's Jellies

What, no Blue Ribbon?  It’s Second Place for my Watermelon Jellies (above) — Orange, Grapefruit and Lemon/Lime Jellies previously won First Place Ribbons, a division win in Confections, and were close to Best in Show.  Last year my Strawberry Stars Jellies earned a Blue Ribbon too.  Each flavor is carefully made with 100% real fruit.  Collectively all have been dubbed Shelly’s Jellies.  I make them because they’re one of my favorite Candies.  I’ve always liked Jelly Candies and can’t believe I can actually make them, and better than any I’ve purchased.  I’m grateful for that and for any win at the fabulous Orange County Fair.

Deep Fried Lobster on a Stick

This year we tried the Deep Fried Lobster on a stick with Pineapple — Not bad, but not cheap.

Fruit Carvings

We’re back tomorrow for more FOOD and Fruit Sculptures — The OC Fair ends this week.

Turkey Burger Pie

From a Potato Contest I’ve learned to appreciate Ground Turkey, and other dishes I wouldn’t choose to make — At least there’s that, since my photos haven’t produced many wins.

* The pictured is not an official entry in the contest. The chosen ones are much better, I think.

Potato Salmon Hash

Not sure that my photos will be chosen this go around, but we enjoyed the meals, though I’d rather have the $500 per photo prize from the Idaho Potato Commission for entries in their Recipe Photo Contest.  There’s still time to enter for a prize, or at a minimum eat a good meal.

Potato Contest Dish

The pictured weren’t chosen as official entries in the Idaho Potato Commission’s contest.

Potato Contest 014

Each is a different dish/recipe in the contest, ending May 29, 2014.  I made and entered (3) of the (6) posted recipes (from top down) — The Salmon and Shitake Idaho Hash that’s half eaten, the Western Scramble introducing the Eggs, and the French Red Wine Infused Idaho Grown Fingerling Potato Salad, a snooty sounding Salad with hard to find Fresh Chervil.

Potato Contest 2 081

Well… I learned how to make Gnocchi (a good thing) and other dishes I’d never choose to make, but didn’t win a prize.  All was for a Recipe Photo Contest sponsored by the Idaho Potato Commission.  My photos weren’t selected and I think I know why.  It’s all about the food (or Potatoes in this instance), not background, though important too, and I didn’t get close enough.  Or the competition was stiff.  I don’t know.  I appreciate the incentive.

Potato Contest 2 069

Moving on… to packin’ for moving, as previously reported — I’ll compete again when time.

Potato Contest 2 077

I’ve been working on 9 out of 10 Idaho Potato Commission Recipe Photo Contest entries.  The September/October contest officially ends today, then judging begins.  It’s a wrap here with Idaho Potato Gnocchi with Pesto, the last dish prepared, photographed and entered to hopefully win again.  If nothing else, it was a learning experience with satisfying, tasty meals.

Potato Contest 2 007

I hadn’t made Gnocchi before — It’s relatively easy, but gets sticky, so be liberal with the flour.

Potato Contest 2 010

If you don’t have a Gnocchi roller, they can be rolled on the back of a fork.

Potato Contest 2 013

Contest recipe linked here includes a complete list of ingredients and instructions.

Potato Contest 2 009

Cook ’em until they bob to the top, plus 5 minutes are general guidelines, but my main focus was the FINAL photo of the prepared dish (and flavor too) — The photo is everything to the contest and flavor most of the enjoyment of the labor, though a win would enhance that too.

Potato Contest 2 081

Photos herein are not official entries in the contest — They’re runners up.

Jalapeno Ham Stuffed Potatoes

There’s yet another Recipe Photo Contest being hosted by the Idaho Potato Commission and you could win $500 or more.  Not sure why I keep reporting about it, since I don’t need the extra competition.  It’s just that it has a lot of fun and favorable elements about it.  To be fair (and helpful), you can learn more about it and enter here on or before October 29, 2013.

Idaho Potato Commission Photo Contest Winner

All my hard work paid off — I won at least (1) of (10) $500 prizes in Idaho Potato Commission’s Recipe Photo Contest.  I just received notification that my photo of the Idaho Potato, Jarlsberg Lite and Roasted Vegetable Terrine was chosen to represent the recipe on the Idaho Potato Commission’s (IPC’s) website.  Thank you!  I’ve previously posted about the contest and my participation in it here, here and here.  The pictured is not the actual winner chosen by the IPC.  It’s a similar photo that was taken for the contest, but not submitted.

Potato Asparagus Soup

It’s Shelly & The Idaho Potato Commission — A shortened, simplified version of Julie & Julia, if you will.  In far-reaching comparison, I prepared all recipes in the Idaho Potato Commission’s Recipe Photo Contest detailed in the Press Release below, and similarly learned a lot from it.  I now await the results.  The Idaho Potato and Fresh Asparagus Soup photo above was not entered in the contest, but its recipe is (1) of (10) to be made by month’s end.

Calling all enthusiastic home cooks and shutterbugs! The Idaho Potato Commission (IPC) is now hosting a bigger and better-than-ever recipe photo contest, featuring 10 recipes, 10 opportunities to win, and a total of $5,000 in cash prizes.

We are always impressed with the quality of work that comes out of our recipe photo contests, and wanted to give folks even more chances to enjoy Idaho® potatoes and show off their culinary and photography skills, said Frank Muir, President and CEO, IPC. “Now that we’re offering more ways to win and a bigger prize incentive, we hope to see even more extraordinary spud snapshots from our Idaho® potato fanatics.”

This summer, the contest is all about summer spuds – pairing the best of what the season has to offer with delicious Idaho® potatoes. To participate, prepare one of the recipes below using Idaho® potatoes, snap a photograph of it, and upload it to idahopotato.com using the entry form provided. A winning photo will be selected for each of the 10 recipes, and each winner will be awarded a $500 prize! Contestants may submit entries for as many of the featured recipes as desired, and have the opportunity to win multiple times.

The deadline to enter photo submissions for the July/August contest period is 11:59 pm PT on August 29, 2013. Read the official rules and more details on how to enter the contest here: http://recipes.idahopotato.com/enter-our-recipe-photo-contest/

About the Idaho Potato Commission Established in 1937, the Idaho Potato Commission (IPC) is a state agency that is responsible for promoting and protecting the famous “Grown in Idaho®” seal, a federally registered trademark that assures consumers they are purchasing genuine, top-quality Idaho® potatoes. Potato Salad 025

One month left to submit final photographs in the Idaho Potato Recipe Photo Contest.  I’ve been busy making dishes that generate photos I’m not allowed to publish — Five Idaho Potato Recipes down and five to go.  The challenge is to prepare and photograph at least (1) of (10) select recipes using Idaho Potatoes and submit it here to (hopefully) win $500 for each 1st Place photo.  You may make and photograph all ten recipes and I’m on a roll, though I did make the easier ones first.  The pictured weren’t chosen as official entries in the contest, but relate to the “Quick Potato Salad For One” recipe.  Mix top photo to make bottom photo.

Potato-Tomato Pie

The Idaho Potato Recipe Photo Contest — Now this contest moved me.  I’m already in with a similar, but different photo than above.  It’s a cool contest!  I receive a lot of email regarding cooking/recipe contests, new food products, new menu items, new restaurants, new cooking shows, new cookbooks, national food days and all things food related.  Though I’d like to try, participate in and/or review most, there’s not enough time in a day, even so I appreciate all.

We made the paper yesterday — The Orange County Register printed an article on me (Shelly Borrell), Nibbles of Tidbits, Shelly’s Jellies and more.  You’ll need to enlarge it to read it here or try this link, though you may need to sign-in or up to view it on the OC Register’s website.
